Considered to be one of BC’s premier ski resorts, the Mount Washington parking lot is a meagre 45 minute drive from down town Campbell River. Turn right from Highway 19, on Strathcona Parkway halfway between Campbell River and Courtenay. The main lodge parking lot is 19 kilometres from the turn off.
At 5215 feet in elevation and a 1657 foot vertical rise, Mount Washington with its ever expanding facilities now includes 2 high speed chair lifts, 2 fixed grip quads, 1 triple chair, 1 double chair, 1 platter lift and a handle tow for beginners. These lifts facilitate the 60 runs ranging from 45% advanced, 35% intermediate and 20% novice.
Mount Washington has gained international popularity specifically because of the diversity of activity available and its yearly annual and sometimes overly abundant snow fall, with an estimated 10.5 m annually and an unprecedented 25 meters of snow accumulating in the winter season of 2009 and 2010 which pushed the ski-able season well into June of that year.
Generally the mountain has a scheduled opening of December 11, each year but that is contingent on the snow levels at that time. Mount Washington often celebrates an early seasons opening the closing date is also contingent on conditions however April 11 equal to is the usual scheduled closing date. With a capacity of over 12,200 skiers per hour and ski terrain equal to 1600 acres, you rarely face long line ups or crowded slopes; this is in addition to the mild temperatures and incredible vistas in every direction.
The back country terrain ranges from kilometres of well groomed cross country track to hundreds of kilometres of rolling high alpine meadows for the more intrepid back country skier. Snow shoes are also available for rent along with every contingency of equipment that may be useful for a day on the hill or a long term stay in one of the many private accommodation properties that are available.
